Sizes And Styles Of Gas Cans

Gas cans are available in many sizes and styles. You can choose the one which suits your requirements the most. The main deciding factor should be, of course, the amount of extra gas you would need. Mainly the amount of gas you will need will depend on the distance you will be covering and the mileage of your four-wheeler. If you are a relatively new driver and this is your first off-road trip, then it might be a bit difficult to accurately know your vehicle’s difference in fuel consumption off-road and on-road. Therefore if you are a new driver, you should take shorter trips close to civilization.

Generally, for most trips, five to ten gallons is more than required. You can use different types of gas cans to carry extra fuel. One of the most common models is the “jerry” also known as the NATO style. They are made of steel and are one of the best options available. The most common size is twenty liters, which can hold up to 5 gallons of gas. These cans have been in use since WWII, and their most important feature is their cap which clasps tightly hence preventing any chances of leakage.

The other style available is the cam cans which are intended to be mount on the inner side of the spare tire. You would need some extra tools for that, but it is convenient. You can also keep the gas cans on the top of your vehicle. It is a good option, but you need to make some calculations before doing that. Sometimes the wight of the gas cans exceeds the maximum limit of weight you can put there because gas cans are quite heavy.

Safely Using And Syphoning

Using gas cans properly can be yet another challenging aspect. It is not as easy as people perceive it to be. Certain precautions should be taken before you move on to filling your gas tank. There should be no source of fire around, and the vehicle should be turned off before filling the gas tank. The process of siphoning fills gas tanks. Earlier it was tougher because you had to suck the gas with your mouth, but now automatic gas siphoning pipes are available in the market. You can easily purchase them as they are inexpensive too.
